I founded Wall Street Prep in 2003, after working as an analyst and then an associate at JPMorgan. I didn’t really want to do banking any more because the lifestyle was terrible and I felt like starting my own company.
In trying to decide what type of business to start, it quickly dawned on me that aside from the financial modeling skills I developed during my three sleepless years at JP Morgan, there wasn’t much that I was in any way qualified to do.
So that’s how the magical journey began. Truth be told, I still can’t believe how quickly our company has grown. We train over 5,000 people per year. We train both students who want to be investment bankers, and investment bankers who want to be better investment bankers. We do it by running summer training at banks, workshops at business schools, and self study programs and boot camps for any individual that wants to learn how to model like a well caffeinated investment banker.
I have made it a priority to bring like-minded former investment bankers to the team. As a result, our team is comprised of a group of former investment bankers who didn’t like investment banking enough to stay investment bankers, but like teaching and financial modeling enough to work at an investment banking training company (we are indeed a rare breed).
I think we all generally share a sense that the technical aspects of investment banking – financial modeling, valuation modeling, putting together excel spreadsheets, is actually fairly simple when you strip away all the noise, and once it’s explained in a straight forward way, and that’s precisely our goal.
Through our work as Wall Street Prep instructors , all of us instructors have had the privilege of meeting many great people – from MBAs trying to “break in” to senior bankers - who continually enrich our understanding of how to prepare analysts and associates for success, as well as the more qualitative aspects of what it takes to succeed in an amazingly competitive industry. This blog is a way for us, the instructors, to share our experiences and thoughts in a slightly more informal way than our classes and self study programs allow.
Best,
