Does Wall Street Prep’s Certification Matter?

Wall Street Prep Premium Package

Wall Street Prep Premium Package

Trainees that complete Wall Street Prep’s Premium Package or live seminars, are eligible for Wall Street Prep’s Certification in Financial & Valuation Modeling. Certification is issued only upon passing an online examination (70% is the passing score) which tests the concepts taught in the Premium Package and live seminars.

Why is certification important?
Certification enables trainees to place this credential on their resumes, since simply enrolling in a program does not signal to recruiters that one actually completed the program.

Do recruiters really care?
In a nutshell, some do and some do not. The primary determinants of whether a candidate will get an interview are GPA, reputation of the undergraduate or MBA program, networking prowess, and past work experience.  If you do not have those things in place, a certification will not help you.

However, when those other elements are in place, the certification can help “round out” the profile.  The reason is that since Wall Street Prep works directly with corporate clients, the certification is a “seal of approval” of sorts that hinge on the reputations of the training providers.

At Wall Street Prep we consistently receive calls from employers to validate certification claims on candidates’ resumes – employers would only do this if the certification mattered. For international students and students that come from a liberal arts background, certification is a highly effective way to demonstrate basic competence in financial concepts and modeling.

Is there a downside?
It should be noted that some have argued that such a credential may potentially be counter-productive because it will expose the trainee to more challenging technical questions.  This is a red herring; it is true that the more candidates represent that they know during interviews, the more they will be challenged. But this is not unique to candidates who complete a program like this: A finance major will undoubtedly receive more challenging technical questions than a music major.  But stronger resumes are also more likely to lead to an interview in the first place. From our experience, if the candidate is careful about not “overselling” the experience, the advantages of using such a Certification as a credential far outweigh any perceived risk.

Differences between the LBO, Bank Modeling, and Premium Package

Q: I wanted to know also about the LBO and Bank package.  I recall reading into both, and they say that they are focused on individuals who are in the Private Equity field, to which I want to know what real differences would I find between those two, and the regular Premium package?

A: The Premium Package includes a comprehensive LBO section (over 300 pages of step-by-step guidance along with model templates and video instruction). The LBO treatment in the premium package is more than sufficient for the vast majority of users. Continue reading

I’m interested in the premium package self-study option. For which excel version is the course designed?

Q: I’m interested in the premium package self-study option. For  which excel version is the course designed?

A: The program is compatible with Excel 2003, 2007, and 2010.  The instructors in the video have all 3 versions so when there are differences (usually Excel 2003 vs. 07/10), they show trainees how to do the steps in both. Sample of the videos and step-by-step manual guides can be found at www.wallstreetprep.com/programs/self_study/premium_package.php

Does Wall Street Prep provide financial modeling courses for overseas applicants?

Q: I want to learn Financial Modelling through an online delivered course. I am based in Australia so cannot attend for course physically in US. Do you provide online courses for overseas applicants?  please advise,

A: Thank you for your inquiry. The Premium Package comes as physical manuals, along with a CD containing the model templates and supporting documents. Shipping to Australia takes anywhere from 3 days to 10 days, depending on the shipping option you choose when checking out.

In addition, if you select the video option, you are able to view and begin the program instantly upon enrollment.  The videos include high quality streaming presentations where you see the manuals being presented online, alongside a video of an instructor working through the Excel models per the manuals.

Complete details about the Premium Package can be found at http://www.wallstreetprep.com/programs/self_study/premium_package.php.

We also offer a purely online version of the Premium Package with no physical materials at http://www.wallstreetprep.com/programs/onlinemodules.php but we recommend the hybrid videos/physical material version of the program for a richer experience.

Can I get CFA PD credits retroactively?

Q: I’m looking to buy the premium package wallstreetprep self-study program. The description mentions that the program offers “35 PD credit hours” to CFA holders. I’m not getting my CFA at the moment and plan on it. Can I still use the certificate after I’m done with the program to retroactively get my credits when I go get my CFA? Thanks!

A: Unfortunately, the CFA Institute does not allow PD credits to be applied retroactively.  Please let me know if you have any other questions, I am attaching the Premium Package details link for your convenience: http://www.wallstreetprep.com/programs/self_study/premium_package.php.

What is in the Advanced LBO Modeling Package

Q: I purchased the premium package earlier this year and would be very much interested in the advanced LBO module. I have gone through the brochure but it isn’t very clear to me what additional things this package would have when compared with LBO modeling in the premium package?

A: As you know from the premium package, the LBO module in the premium package covers core LBO modeling mechanics. The advanced LBO module builds on these lessons and covers the following topics not addressed in the Premium Package’s LBO:

  • Develop an “industrial strength” comprehensive, and integrated LBO model, with multiple operating scenarios. This advanced module is driven off a fully integrated financial statement model and highly flexible for various deal scenarios.
  • Trainees build functionality that enables them to toggle between tax and valuation implications of asset deals, (338(h)(10) election, and stock sale, as well as understand the intuitive differences between them.
  • Many tranches of debt and debt equivalents are included in this model. Trainees model not just straight debt, but also various types of subordinated, mezzanine, and preferred stock. In addition, the model enables users to specify the character of interest payment – PIK vs. cash interest, dividends, etc.
  • The LBO Sources & Uses (S&U) Schedule is more robust including items such as management rollover, management equity, as well as equity sweeteners associated with debt financing.
  • The model includes a section that enables trainees to analyze IRRs – by provider of capital – sponsors, management, preferred, and mezzanine.
  • Trainees build complex standalone schedules that can be “brought ino” the core model via a toggle switch.  The schedules are as follows: Depreciation / Tax / NOLs / Deferred Tax / Working Capital / Amortization schedules
